Meet the Founder. This blog is about introducing Marc de Villiers, the Founder of Fluidity Software Solutions to you. We asked him a few questions. Have a look at what he had to say...
Q: What made you decide to start Fluidity?
A: Some companies don't really want to be bothered by tech, and why should they? They would rather focus on their core business and use a technology partner to handle the tech. It makes sense that the most successful companies today are all tech companies (since tech drives innovation). It's a big deal for a non tech company to invest in their core business and also to invest in software development at the level that I'm referring to. Which is why I think so many companies struggle with it. This is why I came up with the idea of Fluidity.
Q: What is your experience in the IT space?
A: I got into tech from young age, probably about 10 or 11 years old, and by that I mean writing code, of course I use the term loosely. Copying GWBasic code from a book onto a PC and watching it run isn't exactly hard but it's where I started. I found something appealing in giving instructions to a computer and getting it to do what I wanted. I moved on to Turbo Pascal (no more goto statements) after that. I would go around to my friends houses and we'd write programs together (yes we invented paired programming). We'd also play lots of games and take delight in hacking our saved game to give us more money/experience points or etc. At that point we were writing solely procedural code. I noticed that as the programs got bigger so did the complexity. I always wondered how the guys who wrote the games got it right. I could just imagine the complexity and the sheer size of the code base. A choice of career for me was an easy choice, I knew from a young age I wanted to write code. By the time I left school and started my studies I already “knew” how to write code. I remember sitting in class watching the lecturer explain loops when I'd been writing them for years. I got my first job and realised very quickly that I knew nothing. All that time in my childhood, all those years studying and there I was thinking, “wow, I know so little!!”. I could code yes, but I didn't know how to write programs. To explain in another way, laying bricks is one thing, knowing how to build a house is another. I was now learning how to write programs.
Q: Why the tech industry?
A: I was interested in programming from a young age.
Q: Where do you see tech in a few years?
A: Cars that drive themselves, deliveries by drones. Augmented reality.
Q: What is it that you do for your staff to get the best out of them?
A: Create an environment where people want to work. Create a team and a purpose that people feel motivated on, where they want to get out of bed on Monday morning.
Q: What is your favourite Star Wars character, and which of the 7 movies did you prefer?
A: My favourite character is The Emperor and the movie is Return of the Jedi.
